B15 - Sensing of nucleic acids in the pathophysiology of glomerulonephritis associated with chronic viral infection

Chronic infections with the RNA viruses HIV and HCV are often complicated by the development of autoimmune disease and glomerulonephritis. We propose to dissect the underlying molecular mechanisms, focusing on the roles of TLR7 and TLR2 in the development of autoreactive T and B cells and antinuclear autoantibodies in experimental models and human patients with chronic viral infections. We aim to uncover novel disease mechanisms, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets.
